    French coastal scene ship on rough sea at moonlight by Karl Heilmayer ca 1890

    A born Munich native, Karl Heilmayer, son of court actor Emil Heilmayer, attended the Munich Academy only briefly, but was largely self-taught. He undertook numerous study trips to Italy, France, and Belgium. It was during these travels that he found inspiration for his evocative landscapes, often devoted to romantic moonlit nights. The coast of Étretat, with its wave-battered rocks, must have made a strong impression on him, as he devoted himself to this theme several times. 

    In this painting the rough waves reflect the rich light of the moon, against which the silhouette of a sailboat is outlined. On the right edge of the image, in a misty atmosphere, a few partially lit buildings can be seen
