Biography:

George Clarkson Stanfield (1828 - 1878) was an English landscape painter. Son of the painter Clarkson Stanfield (1793-1867) and grandson of the actor and author James Field Stanfield (1749/50-1824), he studied at the Royal Academy schools without officially enrolling. Based in Great Britain, he painted views of his native country as well as France, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.

His works were exhibited at the British Institution (1844-1867) and the Royal Academy (1844-1876). Stanfield was particularly known for his topographical views of Great Britain and those created during his travels in the Rhine Valley, Switzerland, and the Italian lakes.

Born and raised in London, his artistic style was deeply influenced by his father. In 1854, he married his cousin, Maria Blackburn, and the couple settled in Hampstead where they raised their five sons and two daughters. Stanfield devoted himself fully to his art and family, painting and exhibiting until his death from liver disease in 1878.

His artistic legacy includes a body of work that captures the beauty of the European landscapes he visited. His paintings, appreciated for their finesse and craftsmanship, offer a glimpse into the romantic and picturesque views of the 19th century.
