Marie Lucas-Robiquet (1858-1964)
Daughter of a French Navy officer, Marie Aimée Lucas-Robiquet studied under Félix Joseph Barrias at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. A specialist in Orientalist painting, she exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1879 onwards. She painted famous religious and military scenes, landscapes of Brittany and Holland, as well as portraits of women adorned in pink and black satin, in the style of Manet.
But it was above all her paintings of Algeria and Tunisia that brought her great success. She notably depicted numerous market scenes, date harvests, weavers, and washerwomen.
She was also an active exhibitor with the Société Coloniale des Artistes Français and the Salon de la Société des Peintres Orientalistes Français, presenting canvases with vibrant colors, transforming the small towns of the Maghreb into dazzling spectacles of juxtaposed brushstrokes. She also participated in the Colonial Exhibitions of Marseille in 1906 and 1922.
Marie Lucas-Robiquet received several awards, including a third-class medal in 1894 and a second-class medal in 1905. She was awarded the Legion of Honor.
Her canvases, with their vibrant colors, reflect an idealized vision of rural life, transforming it into a theatrical scene, as seen, for example, in her paintings "Arab Interior in Orellal" and "Date Harvest in Algeria." She also depicted everyday scenes while pursuing her career as a portrait painter in Europe, the United States, and South America.
