OUDOT Roland (1897-1981)
"The calvary at the foot of the Chapelle Saint-Sixte in Eygalières".
Oil on canvas,
Signed lower left,
Referenced and titled on the back by the artist: "Le calvaire à Ste Sixte",
Beautiful, high-contrast work by painter Roland Oudot, depicting a view of the calvary at the foot of the Saint-Sixte chapel in Eygalières.
The artist used a palette of ochre and dark colors and played on contrasts.
Studied at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs from 1912 to 1915 in Eugène Morand's studio. In 1915, he became Léon Baskt's assistant at the Ballets russes. It was Baskt who introduced him to the paintings of Paul Cézanne, Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard. During this period, Roland Oudot worked as a furniture and fabric designer for Louis Süe and André Mare.
Roland Oudot is influenced by twentieth-century pictorial modernism: the Fauves and Cubists.
He belongs to the group of painters of poetic reality, along with Maurice Brianchon, Roger Limouse, André Planson and Jules Cavaillès. For René Huygues, they were "those who don't want to give up on pleasing, this gift scorned by the twentieth century, through subject and appearances, as in the past, but also through the liberation of colors, this gift of the present".
A tireless traveler, Roland Oudot discovered the Alpilles in 1937, and a few years later bought a farmhouse in Eygalières, where he stayed for some twenty years, painting the Alpilles hills, the villages of Les Baux, Aureille and Eygalieres, cloudless skies, olive trees, cypresses and stone farmhouses....
Throughout his sixty-year career, he remained true to himself, to the balance and simplicity he loved so much.
