Paul de CASTRO (1882-1940)
"Chemin à Villeneuve lez Avignon" (Way to Villeneuve lez Avignon)
Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right,
The back of the canvas shows an old composition erased by the artist,
Beautiful work by French painter Paul de Castro, depicting a rare view of Villeneuve lez Avignon from rue de Montolivet.
The land in the foreground is now home to the Montolivet elementary school.
On the left is the former 17th-century town house, now converted into 15 apartments, and the Collégiale church on the left.
The artist created this work with lighting at the beginning or end of the day, when the low sun illuminates the stone buildings.
A student of Fernand Cormon and Eugène Thirion at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Paul de Castro exhibited landscapes of Rouen, Honfleur, Provence and Italy, as well as street views of Paris and interior scenes, notably of the Château de Versailles, at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon de la Société National des Beaux-Arts and the Salon d'Automne.
From 1907 to 1932, Paul de Castro exhibited regularly in the Galerie Parisienne alongside other artists such as Auguste Chabaud, Lucien Simon and André Roberty.
Of Italian origin, Paul de Castro became a naturalized French citizen. He was named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur.
Today, his works can be found in numerous museums in France: Musée Calvet in Avignon, Musée des Beaux-Arts in La Rochelle, Petit Palais and Musée d'Orsay in Paris; and abroad: Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
Dimensions: 54 x 73 cm unframed and 72 x 91.5 cm with its green and gilded wooden frame.
