William Sartain (November 21, 1843 – October 25, 1924) was an American artist, known for the melancholic tone of his paintings, as well as for his interests and influences, which ranged from Orientalism to the Barbizon plein air painting style.

A friend of Thomas Eakins, son of the artist John Sartain and brother of the artist Emily Sartain, Sartain was one of the founders of the Society of American Artists and later became president of the New York Art Club.

He attended Central High School (Philadelphia) and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with artists Thomas Eakins and Charles Lewis Fussell. Eakins and Sartain traveled together in 1868. He remained in Paris until 1875, when he returned to Philadelphia, and then settled in New York City.

He died at the Post Graduate Hospital on October 25, 1924.

His works are exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the United States Capitol, and the National Museum of American Art.
