18th century Dutch school
(Entourage of Ludolf BAKHUIZEN)
Oil on canvas
40.5 x 54 cm (51 x 65 cm with frame)

This composition recalls the seascapes of the great 17th-century Amsterdam painter Ludolf Bakhuizen. He painted seascapes with boats on a sea that was usually, but not always, rough, as seen from a beachside animated by figures. The composition here is charming: the characters are children at play (one is carrying an anchor, two others are carrying a boat canvas, while a fourth is peeing in the water!) The colors are beautiful, notably the reds and blues of the boats and the children's clothes, and the grayish blues of the cloudy sky.
