School of Loeff Jacob Gerritz (1607-1670)
"Vaisseaux de bord" and "Galère en Méditérranée" (Galley in the Mediterranean)
    Oil on canvas
    XVII
    1st half

The two-masted vessel, with a row of seven cannons, camped on the starboard side of a fortified roadstead, is based on a warship built in Holland for Louis XIII, circa 1626, similarly depicted by Jacob Gerritsz Loeff (Panel: 55 x 98 cm), and now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (Cf. "A completely illustrated catalog", Amsterdam 1976, p. 351. A 4261).

The second two-masted ship, sailing on rough seas, hailed by sailors in boats and overtaking a galley, can be compared with the warship De Witte in a naval battle scene by Jacob Gerritsz Loeff, in the National Maritime Musem, Greenwich (Cf. E. H. H. Archibald, "Dictionary of Sea painters", Antique Collector's Club Ltd. 1989, Plate 60, p. 261).
