A trained physician, pianist, scholar, and painter, De Knop was closely involved in the artistic and intellectual milieu of early 20th-century Belgium.
He frequented James Ensor, Constant Permeke (whose physician he was), Léon Spilliaert, Henri Vandeputte (poet), and Jean Teugels.
In February 1928, he participated in the Ostend Film Club with Félix Labisse, Henri Storck (filmmaker), Firmin Cuypers, Alfred Coumre, Robert Elleboudt, Désiré Steyns, Pierre Vandervoot, and Henry Van Vyve.
