Fine creative work by this increasingly sought-after artist.
Ali Bellagha, born in Tunis in 1924 and died in Tunis on May 10, 2006, was a Tunisian teacher, draughtsman, painter and engraver. He was a member of the Tunis School artistic movement.
Born into an old family of craftsmen in the medina of Tunis, he left for Paris after studying at the Institut des Hautes Études in Tunis. He studied drawing, engraving and ceramics at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, attended the engraving workshops of Professor René Jaudon, took courses in decoration at the Lycée Claude Bernard in Paris and studied at the Institut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts in Tunis.
In 1953, he organized his first solo exhibition, before exhibiting regularly in Tunis and abroad. From 1956, he taught drawing at Collège Sadiki for four years.
In the 1960s, with his wife Jacqueline Guilbert, he opened a gallery of antiques and creations, Les Métiers, in central Tunis.
Ali Bellagha is passionate about antique objects and the world of handicrafts. He has a modernist approach to the development of the arts and crafts. He revalorizes Arab-Muslim heritage to give it modern accents, and brings Tunisian artistic heritage back to the fore, in particular the use of wood, stone, copper, wool, leather and silver.
A specialist in expertise, paintings, glassware and furniture, he is passionate about all art forms: painting, ceramics, sculpture, restoration and decoration. He works with wood to create still-life compositions. His drawings are brightly colored.
In 2003, Ali Bellagha was awarded the Prix National des Arts Plastiques. In 2006, he was guest of honor at the Salon de l'artisanat in Tunis.
He contributed to the creation of the Dar Gmach eco-museum in the village of Takrouna.
