    Jan Baptist Huysmans (Attributed to)
    Antwerp, 1826 – Hove, 1906
An Oriental Woman in Her Interior
    Oil on wood panel
    48 x 27.5 cm (64 x 43 cm with frame)
Trace of a signature lower left: "H**m**"
On the reverse, a study of an apostle
    Beautiful late 19th-century giltwood frame
    Good condition

Our painting depicts the portrait of a beautiful Oriental woman in her interior, comparable to those portraits painted by the Belgian Orientalist painter Jan Baptist Huymans (with the same recurring details: the section of wall with ceramic panels on the left and the teapot and cup on a small table on the right). Also on the reverse is a study of an apostle. It is worth noting that while Huysmans is known primarily for his Orientalist compositions, he also produced numerous religious compositions for churches in Jerusalem, as well as decorative panels for churches and municipal buildings in Belgium.
