Oil on canvas depicting a moment of relaxation in a park. A young officer of the 6th Cuirassier Regiment amuses his child, sitting on his mother's lap, with his pair of gloves.
The scene probably takes place in the fall; the park is difficult to locate.
Signed lower right "GIRARDET", with a first name Eugène in front which seems to have been added at the time.
Although Eugène GIRARDET, known as an orientalist, also painted genre scenes, it is more likely his younger brother by three years Jules, better known for this type of scene.
Born in 1856, he became a student of CABANEL at the Beaux-Arts. He painted portraits, genre scenes, some orientalist subjects, but specialized in historical scenes. His works were rewarded at the Paris Salon in 1881, and he won the silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889.
