Swiss painter and illustrator, Benjamin Vautier is the great-grandfather of Benjamin Vautier dit Ben, a famous contemporary artist.
This painter from Vaud studied in Geneva with Lugardon before becoming famous in genre painting with rustic subjects in Düsseldorf where he enjoyed success alongside Friedrich Kraus and Franz Defregger. His academic style, very drawn, with bright colors is characteristic of the Düsseldorf School.
