François Maury (1861–1933), Marseille, Provençal painter. Oil on mahogany in a 19th-century Baroque frame with a brass cartouche, signed lower right. Dimensions: 41 x 33 cm; 47 x 55 cm with frame.
He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, where he won first prizes in painting and drawing in 1880, and the Jules Cantini Prize the following year. He continued his artistic training at the Académie Julian in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a member, and at the Salon d’Automne in Paris.
It was primarily in landscape and portraiture that he demonstrated his talent. He painted the landscapes of his native Provence. He particularly excelled in works featuring joyful scenes, voluptuous women, nymphs, or legendary figures reminiscent of the paintings of Adolphe Monticelli, by whom he was greatly influenced and whom he admired (and whom he surpasses, in my opinion, in these romantic scenes). These are his most sought-after and prized paintings among collectors.
Many of his works are on display at the Museum of Fine Arts and the Cantini Museum in Marseille.
