Hubertus van Hove from The Hague is a painter of the Romantic era who specialized in interior views. His father was the Hague painter Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove (1790-1880), who influenced many view painters such as Bosboom.
In his "doorkijkjes" the beautiful colors and bright light are remarkable with an exterior light seen through an interior, a room or a kitchen for example. His transparent interiors with a beautiful effect of sunlight are reminiscent of the art of Pieter de Hooch.
In this painting representing an artist with his drawing board who stops at the bottom of the stairs of a large bourgeois house, we think we recognize the young Rembrandt who began with drawing and engraving in his early days in Amsterdam.
