Calvin Waller Burnett is an American painter, printmaker, lithographer and illustrator born in 1921.
Calvin Burnett was born in Cambridge (MA) in 1921 and graduated from Massachusetts College of Art in 1942.
He obtained a Doctorate of Fine Arts from Boston University in 1960.
He was very active in the fight for recognition of African-American artists. He was one of the founders of the Boston Negro Artists' Association.
Calvin Burnett has been teaching at his former university, Massachusetts College of Art, since 1952, training many generations of artists in the course of his thirty-three years of teaching. Passionate about teaching, he published Objective Drawing Techniques , published by Van Nostrand Reinhold in 1966, in which he summarized his principles and methods.
Calvin Burnett is recognized and exhibited worldwide, and his work has won numerous awards. His work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institute and the National Center for African American Artists.
He died in 2007.
