Oil on canvas depicting a priest and a choirboy, presumably entering the sacristy, by Aloïs Boudry *(1851-1938)
this work from the 1890s is singular for this artist, perhaps a commission, but in any case the atmosphere is special and will delight collectors of this sought-after painter.
Sold in its original frame with cartel.
signed lower left A.Boudry and on the back in the center.
The canvas measures 31cm x 56cm, with minor paint losses.

*Aloïs Boudry was a Belgian painter, known for his portraits, still lifes, interiors, depictions of fishermen and people in their environment.
He studied first at the Ypres academy, then in Roeselare and finally at the Antwerp academy. In 1885, he joined "Als ik Kan" (If I can), an Antwerp association of visual artists working in the traditional manner. He took part in the 1910 World's Fair in Brussels. At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, he emigrated to Great Britain, where he made a name for himself as a portrait painter. He remained in Italy in 1917.
He received several awards, including an honorable mention at the Paris World's Fair in 1889, the silver medal at Bordeaux in 1895 and the silver medal at Brussels in 1910,
He sought his subjects mainly in poor neighborhoods. Many of his paintings deal with the life of the fishermen of Nieuwpoort.
His works can be found in museums in Antwerp, Kortrijk and the National Fishing Museum in Oostduinkerke.
