French coastal scene of Étretat at moonlight by Karl Heilmayer dated 1898 "
SOLD WITHOUT FRAME "
A born Munich native, Karl Heilmayer, son of court actor Emil Heilmayer, attended the Munich Academy only briefly, but was largely self-taught. He undertook numerous study trips to Italy, France, and Belgium.
It was during these travels that he found inspiration for his evocative landscapes, often devoted to romantic moonlit nights.
The coast of Étretat, with its wave-battered rocks, must have made a strong impression on him, as he devoted himself to this theme several times.
The waves crash against the dark rocks, while the moon, peeking out from behind the clouds, bathes the sea in a mysterious light.
People appear only in the margins—on the left, someone seems to have lit a small fire on the rocks, while in the distance, on the horizon, the sails of a boat are vaguely visible in the rain clouds.
