Frithjof Schuon (1907-1988) was born in Basel in 1907 to parents of Germanic and Alsatian descent.
In his youth, he settled in Paris, where he worked as a textile designer. A mystic and Gnostic by temperament, he immersed himself in Vêdânta and took a deep interest in all religions, including Christianity and Islam. A reader and correspondent of French metaphysician René Guénon, he visited Cairo in 1938 and 1939 to make his acquaintance. After the Second World War, Schuon, who lived in Lausanne, undertook several trips to North America, where he met the traditional Plains Indians, to Morocco and several European countries. His written work comprises over twenty books, translated into many languages, and constitutes a veritable metaphysical and spiritual sum unrivalled in the twentieth century. In it, he develops and makes explicit the theme of the "transcendent unity of religions" and the need for an "esoteric" understanding of them as an antidote to contemporary nihilism. His lesser-known pictorial and poetic work reveals the full richness of his astonishing personality.
