Large pastel mounted on canvas, 137 x 100 cm - Signed lower left by an as yet unidentified painter, this pastel depicts the capture of Joan of Arc before Compiègne on May 23, 1430 (and not the 24th as indicated on the work). During a sortie against the Anglo-Burgundians besieging Compiègne, Joan of Arc was captured on the Picardy bank of the Oise, "that is to say, in the diocese of Beauvais, whose bishop, Pierre Cauchon, was fighting against the legitimate king, Charles VII. Cornered against the fortified rampart defending the bridgehead, several arches of which still remain near the King's Great Tower, she was thrown from her horse by an archer who pulled her by her cloak of cloth of gold." Is this pastel a design for a stained-glass window or a cartoon for a stained-glass window installed and destroyed during the Second World War? - It dates from the 1920s/1930s, after the canonization of May 16, 1920.
