The work is presented unrestored. There are some missing pieces on the frame, some wear and rubbing on the paint in places. We note that the panel is warped.
Jean-Baptiste Berré (1777-1839) was a Flemish painter and sculptor. Initially a landscape and still life painter, he settled in Paris in 1808, where he became the official animal painter at the Jardin du Roi. After settling in Paris, Berré devoted himself primarily to animal painting. His work, composed of farm animals and wild animals studied from life at the Jardin des Plantes, was collected by wealthy collectors throughout Europe who appreciated the perfection of his skill.
