Rare painting depicting a colonial plantation in the 18th century.
In a wooded setting, we can make out on the left a mill used to grind cane. On the right, a hut on stilts was used to store perishable goods. 3 bales of cane are fixed to the side of the hut.
To the right of this stilted hut is a slave dwelling with a very high roof.
The scene is animated by black and white figures. In the foreground, a white settler in a boat is beating up a slave.
Oil on canvas signed lower right S or L. VINCK.
18th century.
52 cm X 58 cm. Good condition, may need cleaning.
Certainly intended to decorate a door top, this somewhat naive representation is still very rare to find. We know of some interesting documentation, particularly engravings, but very few painted canvases depicting everyday life on the island plantations.
