Note: this is one of the earliest paintings by Alice Bally, who had not yet changed her name to Alice Bailly (with an "i"). It dates from 1901, as the exhibition label on the back indicates. The subject matter of this painting is close to that of the great Swiss painter Albert Anker, who made childhood his favorite theme. The chiaroscuro atmosphere is a direct evocation of this theme.
