    A very beautiful, finely painted painting depicting an actress.

    Émile Antoine Bayard was born on November 2, 1837, in La Ferté-sous-Jouarre and died in Cairo in December 1891. A French painter, decorator, draftsman, and illustrator, it is primarily his drawings for editorial commissions that attract the attention of collectors, such as those for Le Journal de la Jeunesse, Le Tour du monde, L'illustration, Le Journal pour rire, and Journal des Voyages.
    The publisher Louis Hachette, who greatly appreciated his work, often called upon him to illustrate novels. He illustrated, among other works, Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, The Immortal by Alphonse Daudet, and From the Earth to the Moon and Around the Moon by Jules Verne.
    He also produced paintings, charcoal sketches, and drawings on numerous themes, as well as decorative painting; he notably decorated the foyer of the Théâtre du Palais Royal in Paris.
