Full details can be found at the following - LINK -

An elderly Oriental gentleman is portrayed in a three-quarter view, looking fixedly to the viewer's left, with a long beard and a sumptuous headdress; he wears a turban of brocaded fabric closed on the forehead by a red gem set in gold and a dark cloak that allows a glimpse of his fur collar.

The elegance in deportment, as well as of course in clothing, allows the man to be identified as a wealthy merchant or oriental dignitary.

The painting, executed with excellent technical quality, is an interesting work that presents the connotations of Flemish portraiture, while at the same time revealing the strong legacy of Italian art.

A superb example of portraiture that, from a stylistic point of view, reveals clear affinities with the painting of Rembrandt van Rijn (Leiden 1606 - Amsterdam 1669): the remarkable luministic contrasts, well known from Nordic painting, were the master's favorite tool for achieving an emotional dimension, which only a certain light and use of chiaroscuro can arouse.

It is also easy to juxtapose the canvas with the works of the great master from Leiden who produced, together with a large group of pupils and followers, a series of magnificent portraits especially of male figures connoted by a unique emotional strength and expressiveness.

It should be noted that Rembrandt's art was deeply marked by the painting of the Italian Renaissance, the works of Titian in particular, thanks to an "artistic dialogue" that on the Dutch artist's side is expressed by a painting that winks at the tonal painting of the Venetian master.

We therefore see a muted chromaticism that plays on the range of browns and ochres, impastoed with a warm, golden light that amplifies the enveloping impression created by the background, which, as usual in Rembrandt's portraits, is undefined.

Many authors, both Flemish and Italian, have inherited his technique and figurative repertoire, but among them it is worth mentioning Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich (Weimar 1712 - Dresden 1774), in whose collection we find several examples of manly portraits and characterful figures in oriental dress derived from Rembrandt's works.

The conservation condition of the work appears excellent, the pictorial layer sound.

Complete with wooden frame, richly decorated, antique but not coeval with the painting.
