In this three-quarter view, half-length portrait, we recognize a marshal of Louis XIV, perhaps the Grand Condé, in ceremonial armor characteristic of the end of Louis XIV's reign. He wears a steel cuirass with iridescent reflections, adorned with gilt rivets and a flower on each side of the chest, and edged with red braid. The wide sleeves of a white shirt extend beyond the cuirass. He wears a jabot of fine lace tied with a red bow to form a cravat. A shoulder guard adorned with braid protects each of his shoulders, while a white sash trimmed with gold fringe encircles his waist. A sword hangs at his side, sheathed in a red scabbard. His right hand rests on his hip, while his left appears to be leaning on a baton of command. His pose echoes that of other ceremonial portraits of Louis XIV in armor. The marshal stands out against the ochre-hued plain stretching across the dramatic atmosphere of the dark, cloudy sky in the background.
