Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 54 x 43 cm
17th century carved and gilded wood frame

The painter presents us with a portrait of a young man holding a candle in his hand, which illuminates his face surrounded by curls of hair.
He wears a brown suit with a beige collar, with only his red beret adding a touch of color to this brown cameo palette.

This German painter from Olendbourg traveled extensively, despite his deafness, and spent most of his career on the move. Around 1630, he left Olendbourg for the Northern Netherlands to continue his training and improve his skills, probably via Amsterdam, Haarlem, Delft and Utrecht. In the course of his travels, he would have learned to develop great adaptability, developing his works according to demand.
In Rome, he painted the portrait of Pope Innocent X; in Florence, he worked for the Medicis; in Denmark, he was court painter to Frederick III.
It was while copying Willem Duyster's painting "The Officer by Candlelight" that he became familiar with this technique. The use of candles as a light source in interiors was developed by Gerrard van Honthorst and Georges de La Tour.
