Italian School in the Genoese spirit of the 17th Century
Nativity
A beautiful and moving scene of Mary, Jesus, and John the Baptist as children, late 17th century, in a sweetly simple depiction within a slightly evocative biblical universe, with a crowned Mary lifting a veil under which Jesus slept and offering it to John the Baptist, holding a thin cross. In the upper right corner, we can see the representation of the heavenly Jerusalem of the 12 tribes of Israel representing humanity.
The faces, each with such sincere naivety, and the colors in their contrasting register, tenderly capture the attention.
The beautiful 18th-century frame made of papier-mâché cardboard, as was quite common since the 16th century, is in very good condition.
