    16th century
    Rare and moving religious painting depicting Saint Gertrude, identified by the ancient inscription S. GETRYDA visible at the bottom. The saint is depicted in a recumbent bust, dressed in a black monastic habit, looking up to heaven in an attitude of recollection and devotion. On her chest, she holds the Sacred Heart, symbolizing her mystical piety.
    In the upper left-hand corner, three cherubs support a radiant monstrance bathed in light, reinforcing the spiritual and Eucharistic dimension of the composition. The attributes on the table (book, crosier) recall his spiritual role and erudition.
    The well-balanced composition is distinguished by the softness of the faces, the depth of chiaroscuro and a warm palette dominated by brown, ochre and golden tones, typical of late-Renaissance religious painting.
    Re-finished oil on canvas, presented in an antique cutaway wooden frame, probably of the period or slightly later, elegantly outlining the work.
