Description

Instantly recognizable by the perfume jar—also known as a nard vase—that she used to anoint Christ’s feet during the meal at the home of Simon the Pharisee (Gospel of Luke 7:36–50), Mary Magdalene is depicted, as is customary, with her hair loose. Her upturned gaze, meditative expression, and the drapery slipping off her shoulder convey the moment of conversion and repentance—a major theme in 17th- and 18th-century religious painting. The gentle face recalling the grace of Raphael’s models, the delicacy of the hands, and the refined rendering of the skin tones all combine to create a fine devotional painting of high quality, where the subject matter is matched by a timeless artistic execution.

This oil-on-canvas work is in very good condition.
