The Verona School of Fine Arts was founded in 1764 (late 18th century) by Giambettino Cignaroli.
Oil on panel - Collection stamp on back.
This panel was painted following the models of works by Correggio (1489 -1534 ) currently at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles .
Called the Veil of Veronica (or Head of Christ).
The motif depicted here is the result of the precise moment when, on the way to Calvary, a woman removed her veil to wipe the face of the Messiah. The image of Jesus Christ's face was placed on the linen handkerchief, and has been miraculously preserved over the centuries, becoming an object of worship.
This reproduction is of excellent quality and remains in the spirit of the original painting, being larger than the model painted by Correggio ( 23 cm x 28 cm ) .
Dimensions:
Without frame: 37 x 32 cm.
With frame: 54 x 49 cm
19th century frame (gilded in perfect condition)
Overall panel in very good condition,
just a few minor restoration touches, which is normal for its age.
