Alexandre Couder was an academic painter who studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1824 under Gros. A Salon painter, he exhibited in Paris from 1833 onwards, notably with beautiful still lifes.
Towards the end of his life, his art became freer in composition and technique. This corresponds to a period when painting, particularly still life, sought greater freedom from around 1870. Flowers were no longer painted in bouquets in vases or on ledges, but rather scattered flowers or flowers emerging from the garden, for example.
At Couder, the colours are always very beautiful and the composition is a rock of multiple flowers like here, poppies, daisies and field bindweed.
