ANDRÉ COTTAVOZ (1922-2012) and his friends Jean Fusaro, Jacques Truphémus, , Georges Adilon and Philibert Charrin, graduates of the École des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, living badly in the sacrificial post-war years, banded together to found a movement away from "isms" like Impressionism, Fauvism or Cubism, which would reject all labels.
Sanzisme was born, and was supported by the artists of the École de Paris, who introduced the group to gallery owners and art lovers.
For André Cottavoz, the material must take shape; it becomes thick, kneaded with his fingers and knife as if he wanted to reach the heart of his paintings, from which a beautiful light emerges to envelop his motifs. For him, light is also matter, and there can be no form without it and without color.
