Pair of still lifes, each depicting a variegated bouquet of flowers in iridescent colours and elegantly juxtaposed with each other, including roses, tulips, dahlias, narcissus and carnations, and other botanical varieties, each contained in an openwork basket, arranged against a dark neutral background, from which the vivid colours, from luminous whites to shades of pink and bright reds, stand out.
The canvases, executed around the second half of the 17th century, are the work of an artist of the Spanish school, no stranger to Italian influences. Due to the compositional arrangement of the flowers, the details of their design and their contrasting colours, they can be considered to belong to the catalogue of the Madrid painter José de Arellano (Madrid, 1653 - c. 1714).
One of the leading figures in still life painting in Spain at this time, son and disciple of the famous flower painter Juan de Arellano, he imitated his father to whom many of his works are attributed, although his style is more casual.
Condition: The canvases are in a good state of conservation, with scattered restorations, accompanied by antique lacquered frames with tortoiseshell motifs.
