Large porcelain cookie sculpture of a child with a cage, based on a work by Jean Baptiste Pigalle in 1750. The child, with a pensive face, is shown seated with his left hand resting on his chin and his right hand holding a closed birdcage. It is signed Pigalle on the terrace at the back and a signature in the Sèvres style below. 19th century in the 18th century style.
The original work is in the Louvre, and the subject is described as "Portrait présumé d'Armand Louis Joseph de Marmontel, marquis de Brunoy (1748-1781), only son of Jean Pâris de Marmontel (1690-1766), godfather of Mme de Pompadour (1721-1764) and court banker. Salon de 1750, n°62."
*Jean Baptiste Pigalle:1714-1785 was a renowned French sculptor of the 18th Century. Considered a master by his contemporaries, his work is at the crossroads of the Baroque and Neoclassical movements. Pigalle was a well-known artist in noble circles, where he was highly prized. In view of his success, Madame de Pompadour, a true patron of the arts, placed him under her tutelage in 1750. Such was his renown that he went on to receive commissions from the highest echelons of society, including the King.
Our cookie is a large, highly-furnished piece, well-suited to complete an 18th-century decor, whether Louis XV or Louis XVI. Our work is a variant of the Louvre version, which features the open cage.
Very good condition, with a handwritten note on Pigalle, the result of research by a previous owner in the early 20th century.
