Large dish decorated with stylized peonies surrounded by their foliage on a "rice seed" background Mijiazhen 米家针 symbol of longevity, perseverance and autumn.
This dense pattern work, which resembles a net of tiny dots or cells enclosing the flowers, is characteristic of dense decorations known as "on a spiral background" or "rice seeds". This requires immense precision in brush painting. This style of dense, high-contrast blue-and-white decoration originated in Jingdezhen, China, during the reign of the Kangxi emperor (1662-1722). Its remarkable condition can be seen in the vividness of the cobalt blue, the white of the glaze which is slightly blue-gray in places, small firing indentations and two small, almost invisible fels.
On the reverse, a mark in Zhuanshu 篆书 probably a "praise mark" jishi ming 记事铭 praising the quality and finesse of execution of the ceramist and painter together.
