A rare musical cup featuring an accompanying musical score of the lyrics to an early 19th-century love song, "Besoin d'Amour" (Need for Love). The cup is inscribed with the score and the lyrics of the first verse of the original song. The saucer displays the lyrics of the second verse. The cup boasts a superb decoration of fine gold, depicting pine cones and palmettes in matte and burnished finishes. The interior is entirely gilded with a burnished finish, creating the illusion of drinking gold when the cup is filled with coffee. This piece dates from the Empire-Restoration period, early 19th century, and is attributed to the Dagoty factory.
The text is inspired by the work of Mauro Giuliani (the third romance of Opus 13), published in Vienna in 1810.
Our cup is a truly luxurious piece, not only because of the exceptional quality of its gilded decoration, but also because the musical motif is a genuine musical score, not a fanciful composition where the artist has simply jotted down notes at random. This requires the decorative painter to master not only the art of goldwork but also the art of music.
A beautiful collector's cup, certainly a unique piece, in excellent condition, with slight wear to the gilding on the text in the center of the saucer. The rest is virtually in mint condition. No damage to the porcelain.
