This is a very beautiful vase in the famille verte palette made in fine porcelain. It has been decorated with 2 phoenix depicted in a rare, archaic form, surrounded by flowering vines. I am pretty sure this is late Qing / early Republic piece but that is an opinion, please make up your own minds. I am happy to answer questions and provide more photos if you want them.
It is not in perfect condition having been drilled in the side for a lamp cord andunfortunately that has caused three hairlines to radiate from this small hole. There is also a chip to the base exposing very white paste. There is some wear/scratches as one would expect and you can feel a few indents which occured during manufacture. The interior base of the vase is only just under the drilled hole meaning the foot is quite deep owing to the fact that mortar (or something) as been poured into the interior. I believe the intention was to stop the vase tipping over when it was used as a lamp as a lampshade would probably have unbalanced what is a fairly slender meiping shape.
You will also see wax remains in the inside of the neck which I imagine was part of an export seal, a piece of which has fallen into the vase and stuck to the interior wall. .
On the whole this is a very nice and unusual vase: the shape and decoration are very attractive and at just under 24 cms high, it is a nice size. It weighs 685g.
