Large polychrome earthenware wall fountain – Paris, 1894 – Renaissance-style decoration – H. 69 cm
A superb and large polychrome earthenware wall fountain, dated 1894, featuring rich decoration in the Italian Renaissance style.
This elegant, large-scale piece is distinguished by its baluster-like silhouette, its generously curved body, and its lid topped by a spectacular finial depicting a fantastical creature with a dragon’s head, rendered in relief and enhanced with vibrant colors.
The front features a beautiful hand-painted decoration composed of foliage scrolls, arabesques, stylized flowers, lambrequins, and architectural motifs, in a luminous palette combining cobalt blue, turquoise, green, red, yellow, and manganese on a white background.
The lower section is adorned with a decorative frieze featuring hanging leaf motifs, emphasizing the elegant curves of the entire piece.
The fountain retains its original metal spout with zoomorphic decoration, depicting the head of a mythical creature, which adds a particularly original touch to this piece.
On the reverse, several handwritten inscriptions are visible, notably a stylized monogram accompanied by the date 94, likely corresponding to the year 1894.
The piece is a late 19th-century Parisian work, in the style of the major historicist earthenware productions of that era.
A large-scale decorative piece, remarkable for the richness of its decoration, the vibrancy of its glazes, and its architectural character.
