Beautiful bronze signed Pierre-Jules Mêne (1810-1879), a Parisian sculptor considered one of the main creators of small animal sculptures of his time.
A work of great realism is presented to us, illustrating a hunting dog, a male, at a standstill. Its short-haired dress reveals a slender, almost skeletal morphology of the animal, reflecting a certain endurance.
The canine holds in its mouth, which is furnished with sharp teeth, a hare that it has surely just picked up. The tracker's ears are hanging down, his gaze on the prowl, he seems to be on the alert on all fours.
This scene is set on a vegetal ground penetrated by roots and rocks.
The whole rests on an ovalized bronze plinth, 2 cm thick.
A guarantee of authenticity, the signature "P.J. MÊNE" is engraved on the base of this representation.
It is with great dexterity that the artist has shaped this work, in which the natural instinct of our most faithful companion is represented without judgment.
