    The dog is represented lying down , at rest. Emmanuel Fremiet is considered one of the main representatives of animal sculpture in the 19th century . 
    Signature of the sculptor "E.FRÉMIET", in hollow on the naturalistic oval terrace , richly decorated . 
    Ancient bronze , period second part of the 19th century .

    Emmanuel Fremiet (1824-1910) 

    Emmanuel Fremiet was a French animal sculptor , born December 6 , 1824 in Montrouge .

    He was a leading exponent of rationalist realism and French naturalism in the second half of the 19th century .
    After attending evening classes , he joined the studio of his uncle François Rude .
    The fashionable theme of the "Confrontation between Man and Beast" inspired Emmanuel Fremiet and other artists .
    He was elected to the Academy of Fine Arts in 1892 .
    Emmanuel Fremiet succeeded Antoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875) as professor of animal drawing at the Paris Natural History Museum .
    He became the official statuary of the Third Republic .

    Emmanuel Fremiet died in Paris on September 10 , 1910 .
