Statuette of a passing bull after a model
by Giovanni di Bologna di Giambologna* (1529-1608)
Bronze on a stepped oval base in black marble and sienna marble.
The animal is shown in profile, its head turned to the left and its left leg raised.
* Giambologna’s model, probably made for the Grand Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici, is documented for the first time in 1753.
A bronze of this model kept at the Bargello Museum in Florence is the only one considered to be an autograph (cf. Dhanens, Jean Boulogne, Giovanni Bologna Fiammingo, Brussels, 1956).
Italy, 18th century.
