A bronze sculpture with a brown patina depicting an archer in the act of drawing his bow, with the bow raised, in a dynamic pose that highlights the subject’s anatomy.
Resting on a circular marble pedestal, the piece as a whole offers an elegant contrast of materials.
Signed “S. Norga” on the base, for Sylvain Norga (1892–1968)
Biography: Born in Etikhove (Belgium) on July 21, 1892—Died on May 4, 1968, in Juan-les-Pins. Belgian School. Trained at the Academies of Oudenaarde and Ghent (Belgium). Student of the sculptor A. de Beule. Sylvain was one of four sons of Emma Hanskens and Franz Norga, a woodcarver and furniture maker in Oudenaarde. He began by creating marble and wooden statues using the direct carving technique. In 1920, with the help of his brother Michel, he established the Norga foundry in Brussels. The foundry was a pioneer in the production of sculptures depicting athletes, African subjects, and animals.
In 1935, he sold his business to Marcel Choux and moved to Juan-Les-Pins, France.
