The Borghese Gladiator is a famous ancient sculpture, dated to the 1st century BC and attributed to the Greek sculptor Agasias, active between 125 and 75 BC, who belonged to the Hellenistic school of Ephesus. Despite its name, the work does not depict a Roman gladiator, but a naked Greek warrior in full combat action.
The statue stands out for its strong dynamism and the great precision of its anatomy, which finely reproduces the movement of the body in tension. Rediscovered in Italy in the 17th century, it entered the collections of the Borghese family before being acquired by the Musée du Louvre. Today, it is recognized as one of the major masterpieces of Hellenistic sculpture.
This is a large bronze proof with a dark brown patina, produced around 1920, with no apparent founder's mark. The patina shows some signs of wear, but the whole remains in good overall condition.
Dimensions: height 80 cm; rectangular base 60 × 31 cm.
