Art Deco bronze sculpture depicting a weeping cherub placed on a white and gray veined marble base.
Signed Andrey Nikolov (see photo), a highly regarded and rare Bulgarian sculptor.
1878-1959
Measurement: 15.5 cm excluding base.
He was born in the town of Vratsa, the son of a poor shoemaker. He attended the first class of the State Art School, opened in 1896. He graduated in sculpture in 1903. That same year, on the recommendation of his teacher, Boris Schatz, he went to Paris to continue his studies. There, he studied for four years under the renowned sculptor Antonin Mercie at the École des Beaux-Arts. At that time, different trends in sculpture were competing for the stage in Paris, but Andrei Nikolov sought to find his own unique path. His talent did not go unnoticed, and his works were exhibited at the Paris Salon. “Bulgaria is too small for this artist,” Rodin himself said of Andrei Nikolov.
