Proof in bronze with shaded patina.

''David Vainqueur'' representing the victory scene of Davis over Goliath.
Signed A. Mercié on the terrace in cursive letters.
Cast by Ferdinand Barbedienne, signed on the base.
Very good condition, very fine chasing and original patina.
Base in griotte marble.
Height 30cm

Original work realized by Antonin Mercié at the Villa Medici in Rome between 1869 and 1870. Commissioned in bronze by the State in 1872, exhibited at the Salon of the same year, then placed in the Musée du Luxembourg from 1874.
A marble copy was exhibited at the Exposition Universelle de Paris in 1889.
Other examples in bronze are in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and in the Musée des beaux-arts in Toulouse.
