These Chinese ivory okimono depict the bodhisattva of compassion Avalokitesvara. He is represented in China under a female aspect and designated by the name of Guanyin. This character, unknown to the Western eye, is nevertheless very popular in China where Guanyin has enjoyed a very particular fervor for several centuries.

Guanyin plays the flute here - a hobby that we know well - sitting on a Fenghuang, mythical bird reigning over all the other birds because it is said to be the sweetest and wisest of all these creatures to feathers. It is often likened to the Chinese phoenix although it differs from it in several features. The Fenghuang is the symbol of the empress in the same way that the dragon is that of the emperor.
