This sculpture is by Marseilles artist Philippe Garbeille, whose career was atypical in that, after studying in Marseilles and Rome, he decided to settle in the United States, in New Orleans, in 1842.
Among his most important commissions were Saint Francis and the Virgin and Child (1846) for St. Louis Cathedral, as well as portraits of Zachary Taylor (1847), President James Knox Polk (1848) and Andrew Jackson (1848).
He died in New Orleans in 1853.
