Large head of Sakyamuni Buddha on pedestal
Former Kingdom of Siam
Ayutthaya school
16th - 16th century
The Buddha's gentle face has an oblong shape and is characterized by fine, curvilinear eyebrows of perfect curvature, meeting at the base of an aquiline nose with dilated nostrils. Heavy eyelids resting on closed almond-shaped eyes indicate that the Awakened One is immersed in deep meditation.
The mouth, with its thick lips and pronounced corners, is marked by a slight smile, indicating the Blessed One's detachment from earthly passions and contingencies. The hair, once lacquered, is defined by a wide border and is made up of a multitude of small spikes. The top of the skull is also marked by a wide circular border, within which small spikes are arranged in concentric circles, symbolizing the ushnisha. The long ears have lobes distended by the weight of the ornaments the Blessed One used to wear, symbolizing his past worldly life.
We are dealing here with an early representation of Ayutthaya art, our Buddha face showing influences from the earlier kingdoms and empires of U Thong and Sukhothai. These characteristics suggest a date between the 15th and 16th centuries.
