Sculptural resin globe by François Godebski (1940-1997), France, created and dated 1980. Made of translucent fractal resin, the work takes the form of a perfectly rounded sphere, articulated by curved seams and intersecting internal fissures, producing a complex interplay of light, depth and movement. A luminous amethyst violet, the resin reveals layered internal textures, striations and inclusions that vary visually according to light and viewpoint. This exploration of transparency and internal structure is characteristic of Godebski's pioneering approach to polyester and fractal resin from the early 1960s. Both sculptural and contemplative, the piece reflects the artist's interest in geometry, material experimentation and optical effects. Signed by the artist, it is a refined example of post-war French sculpture in resin. François Godebski (1940-1997) was a French painter and sculptor born in Bellegarde, Gard, into a family of artists. Initially trained as an architect in Paris, he went on to study painting at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. From the early 1960s, he developed a distinctive body of work in polyester and fractal resin, producing spheres, obelisks and abstract forms exploring light, transparency and internal structure. Mr. Godebski was also active as an organizer and advocate of the arts in the south of France.
